Strange as it may seem, a computer is mindlessly stupid though faster at being mindlessly stupid we could possibly ever be and totally lacking common sense. all the exciting and the wondrous things that a computers seem to do, sre really what computer programs or SOFTWARE can do. A computer can not even wink unless a program instructs it to do so.
IN the early days , computer were sold on the basis of their power, their speed and their storage capacity. today all that is changing , and the sale of computer is affected, to a great extent, by their software the instuctions that tell the computer what to do.
Software can be of two types : System software and Apllication software. System software comprises of programs that perform routine tasks for all users, and application software comprises of programs that are written for specific computer applications, such as payroll, inventory control, financial accounting, etc.
System software are the programs that run the computer system, and help the application programs during their exection {running}.
It is good for human beings that computers are mindlessly stupid and do what humans tell them to do through system and application software. I have seen few movies where computers stated thinking and took over the control. Humans were like children before them. I hope that does not come true in real life.
