The Metabolic Syndrome.

Cardiac diseases are on the rise and this can be attributed to the increasing affluence amongst the people all over the world. Hitherto not much attention was paid to a combination of diseases collectively called as The Metabolic Syndrome or the Syndrome X. More and more researchers and doctors have now understood the importance of this entity.

So what exactly is the metabolic syndrome? A person is diagnosed to have the metabolic syndrome if he or she has the following conditions:
1. Obesity.
2. Hypertension.
3. Hypercholesterolemia.
4. Insulin resistance (Diabetes).

A combination of the above factors results in increased incidences of coronary heart disease and cerebro-vascular disease. Treatment modalities should be aimed at targeting all the factors involved in the syndrome.
