Weight loss drugs
The search for that magical drug which helps weight loss is an ongoing battle. Currently there are three drugs that offer minimal weight loss but can also cause significant long-term side effects.
Obesity leads to heart disease, worsend diabetes and has a host of other ill-effects. The panacea to obesity remains a mystery. Three drugs researched – Xenical (Orlistat), Meridia (Reductil and Meridia) and Accomplia (Rimonabant) have proven to cause a marginal 5% reduction in weight and over a period of 2 years. Drugs are not the magic cure and are not for everyone said researchers in a study published in the British Medical Journal.
However they do lead to beneficial reductions in blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. The benefits come at the cost of side effects some of which can be serious.
Drugs like Ponderax were banned by the USFDA as they were associated with serious heart valve abnormalities. The hope for anti-obesity drugs remains thin!!
