Indian cricket team for the tests against Pakistan
The Indian Cricket team for the test series against Pakistan has been announced and quite expectedly Yuvraj Singh is unlucky to miss out on a place.
The selection confounds logic as far as I can see it. Yuvraj Singh is the man in form with more than 270 runs in the recently concluded 5 one-dayers against Pakistan. He is fresh from facing the likes of Shoaib Akhtar, Umar Gul and Rao Ifthekar. Compare this with VVS Laxman. He played a couple of Ranji trophy matches and did nothing substantial in them. Match practice is definitely lacking. There is no denying the fact that I am a great fan of VVS Laxman and love his grit and determination. Who can forget the epic 281 at Eden Gardens against a marauding Australian team? The selectors have kept true to the adage “form is temporary and class is permanent”. However teams like Australia will not pay much attention to past records and get their best eleven out for matches.
Indian selection has to move forward and think for the future. A Laxman or a Ganguly will not be around forever and they need to groom talent. Consider this – Yuvraj has 195 one-dayers under his belt but only 19 test matches!! In my opinion the ideal eleven should have been:
Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Kartik (for sheer lack of opening batsmen in the country!), Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, MS Dhoni, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ranadeb Bose (Munaf Patel is a big selection joke!! RP Singh and Sreesanth are out injured. Ranadeb Bose has been consistent in Ranji trophy matches and deserves a chance.)
The concept of going in with 6 batsmen is again a shame for a team that can boast of a Sachin, Dravid and Yuvraj with MS Dhoni and Pathan to chip in with some valuable runs when needed. Irfan Pathan would have been a good choice for his ability to swing the ball. Genuine pace can be compromised for by teams like India as we do not have a Brett Lee or a Dale Steyn in the country and the pitches are anyway dead tracks.
Come on India – Think for the future!!
