Confer Bharat Ratna on Atal

Lal Krishna Advani has proposed the name of Atal Bihari Vajpayee for India’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna. In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh he has said, “I would like to propose the name of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee for recognition with Bharat Ratna this year. His contribution to our national life is so varied and well-known, and sustained over such a long period, that it bears no reiteration”.

Advani has listed 10 significant points commending Vajpayee. According to him Vajpayee deserved the honour for having the longest parliamentary career among all living members of the House and for the fact that he was the longest serving PM after Nehru and Indira. Vajpayee is a statesman. As opposition leader he has supported the Govt whenever national interest was at stake. He had supported war against Pakistan in 1971 and India’s first nuclear test in 1974.

I fully agree with Advani. Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee should be honoured with Bharat Ratna.

A B Vajpayee definitely deserves this title. However considering congress and the fact that Vajpayee belongs to BJP and it is the general perception that BJP is the political arm of RSS, Congress might feel that they will be incurring the wrath of the minorities and so would not venture into it.
