the answer

what is good?
i asked in an amusing mood.
order, said the law court.
knowledge,said the school.
truth,said the wise
pleasure said the fool.
love, said the poet.
fame ,said the dreamer.
ah! whispered my heart.
kindness is the word
that gives you peace in the world.

new year wishes

many fond wishes lurk in me
as the year approaches.
i wish i were a child
to pluck the moon from the browser of the sky
and move among fairies in the thin air.
i want to move among valleys and meadows
where breeze and moonlight
play on the sweet-scented flowers.
i wish for a world
where the strong knot of love
binds the whole humanity.

immortal love.

o god!
is it wrong to love?
if so ,why do parents
so tenderly nourish their children?
why does Laxman sacrifice
his sleep for fourteen years?
why do romeo and Juliet
pass away in their eternal embrace?
everything else is transitory?
it is only love which lingers.

a prayer.

teach me word to speak the truth,
give me knowledge to know thee and myself,
give me streangth to wage war on injustice.
give me a heart that overflows with love.
teach me patience to brave the world with a smile.

mother

right from the cradle,
she nourishes us to manhood
besides our sick beds
she spends sleepless nights
imploring on all gods to restore us health.
she kills herself by inches that we may live.
she sacrifices her comforts that we may thrive.
her memories outlive her death
and lingers on till we breathe our last.

life is like the seasons.

like the scorching sun of the summer
life sometimes grows dull, dry and bitter.
like the torrential monsoon outpour
sorrows make us shed out tear
like the clear autumnal sky and streams
peace and bliss shine in our lives
like the pinching cold of the winter
life becomes unbearably bore.
like the gentle breeze of the spring
life bristles with love that nothing else can bring.

i still remember you.

after that short meeting
in the park where
the red rays of the rising sun
kissed the white flowers
that tossed their heads in the gentle breeze
we have not met since then.
your promised letters and photographs
still remain promises.
but when the dawn sets in
i make my weary way to garden
to look at the flowers covered
with beads of pearl
that reflect your sweet smiling face.

THE MISER

A MISER STARTED TO PRAY TO GODDESS LAKSHMI:
“OH MOTHER ! IF YOU KINDLY ALLOW ME TO HAVE A LAKH OF RUPEES BY WAY OF REWARD FOR MY DEVOTION TO YOU,I PROMISE TO DONATE HALF OF IT TO ONE OF YOUR TEMPLES.IF YOU DOUBT MY WORD,STRAIGHTAWAY DEDUCT FIFTY THOUSAND RUPEES AND GIVE ME THE REST!”

“WE SHOULD NOT BARGAIN WITH GOD,AS IT IS HE WHO GIVES US EVERYTHING,EVEN THE MATERIAL TO WORSHIP HIM WITH.”
