No pain no gain!!

This is a wonderful story that I was told by a friend of mine. It is loaded with wisdom and is so true of many of us.

Once in a cave deep in a forest there was a beautiful marble statue and people from all walks of life from all over the world would come to visit her. One fine day at night when all visitors had left the marble tiles on the floor united as one and began to address the marble lady.
Stones: It is not fair, just not fair. Both of us came from the same cave and while people come and admire you, they step on us and ignore us.
Marble lady: So?
Stones: We feel it is just not fair.
Marble lady: My dear friends, do you remember the day when the stone cutter came to carve us?
Stones: Of course yes. We did not like him one bit. How dare he hurt us?

Hypertension – What you should know?

Many of you must have often heard about a parent or a grandparent telling you that they have ‘high blood pressure’ or hypertension? What exactly is hypertension? What should be the normal blood pressure? What are the effects of high blood pressure? What should be done to avoid the effects of high blood pressure? How is hypertension caused?

How to assess your weight?

Obesity is one of the diseases of the affluent world. It is indeed a silent killer. Obesity has been linked to diabetes, heart disease, strokes and hypertension. Obesity has been called as a pandemic as it tends to affect millions of individuals across the globe.

Are you obese? Are you overweight? What are these terms? How does one find out?

A simple calculation can tell us what type of pattern we fit into. This is called as the BMI or the Body Mass Index. This ratio is got by dividing your weight in Kilos by your height in meters squared. For example if you weigh 90 kilos and your height is 1.8 meters, then your BMI is 90/(1.8)(1.8) = 27.78 Kg/Sg.m.

<17.9: Underweight. 18 - 24.9: Normal. 25 - 29.9: Overweight. 30 - 34.9: Grade I obesity.

Lessons in Management – 2

In keeping with the encouraging reply by admin, I have decided to post another good management lesson.

A turkey used to see an eagle sitting up a tree daily and wanted to get to that high spot. The turkey told about this to the cow. The cow told the turkey that if the turkey nibbled on some of his (the cow’s) droppings which were packed with nutrients he will get the strength and energy to reach the top of the tree. The turkey nibbled on the droppings daily and was able to scale the tree daily with more height each day. Finally the turkey was able to reach the top of the tree. Soon a hunter spotted the turkey on the treetop and shot the bird down.

The moral of this story? Bullshit might be able to get you to the top but it will not keep you there!!

Diabetes drug linked to osteoporosis

GSK’s drug for diabetes Avandia (Rosiglitazone) has come under the scanner after reports that the drug increases the risk of Osteoporosis has been confirmed.

Rosiglitazone belongs to a class of drugs called as Thiazolidinediones (aka PPAR Gamma activators) and the other drug in this class is Pioglitazone. It has been a useful drug in the management of Type II Diabetes and it works by increasing the sensitivity of the body cells to circulating Insulin.

Lessons in management

I have read a management joke some time back and am not sure if it is on the public domains. Nevertheless I decided to blog it here with the hope that some of you might not have read it or heard about it.

A raven was flying south to avoid the winter. On the way the bird was so tired that it fell down to the ground on the snow and lay there freezing. Soon a passing cow happened to dump some dung on the bird. Now the dung actually began to keep the little bird warm and the bird started to sing in joy.

A little while later a cat that was psssing by heard the sound, explored in the dung and dug out the bird. Promptly the cat ate the bird and left contented.

What’s the moral of this story?
1. Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy.

Drugs for erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is a condition associated with an inability to achieve and maintain an erection resulting in an inability to participate in penetrative sexual intercourse. It is commonly seen in diabetic patients, patients with severe atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries due to fat deposits), and spinal cord accident patients (paraplegics and quadriplegics)

Blackjack – A casino entertainment!

Casinos are places of entertainment (and also gambling for the addict!!) I quite enjoy a visit to the casino once in a while and my favorite game in the casino is Blackjack (BJ). Amongst most other games offered in a casino, Blackjack is one game where intelligent playing can help you in getting the house edge down to a minimum. Roulette, Baccarrat, Poker and slot machines are totally dependent on luck while luck, no doubt plays a major role in BJ, still one can win in BJ.

Bothered by morning sickness? Think twice, it is beneficial!

Morning sickness – the highly irritating nausea and vomiting that afflicts most mothers-to-be during the early months of pregnancy can be beneficial to women in later stages of life as it reduces the risk of breast cancer.
According to latest research carried out in the US women who esperience morning sickness have 30% less chances of getting breast cancer than women who have an entire pregnancy without the morning sickness. Although the axact mechanism is unclear it is good to speculate that higher levels of circulating Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) secreted by the ovarian and placental cells might play a role. This hormone is known to have several activities that have protective properties against cancer cells.
