Mobile phone etiquette

Mobile phones have become a necessary evil these days. It is extremely hard to imagine a world without these gadgets and sometimes I wonder what people used to do to communicate when these phones were not available. While conveniance is one thing, annoyance is the other side of the mobile phone. I have been both the victim and culprit of not following the basic etiquettes demanded while using a cell phone. What can we do to use the mobile phones more appropriately and socially?
1. Use better sense and discretion while using a mobile phone. If speech is silver then silence is golden!
2. Its always impolite to banter on the cell phone in public places where people need silence: the library, places of worship, movie halls, classrooms, boardrooms!

Working night shifts? Think again!!

Smoking causes cancer – This is an accepted statement. How about night shifts?? Sounds whacky!! However the International agency for Research on Cancer, the WHO’s cancer wing is going to classify Night shifts as a possible carcinogen!
Anabolic steroids, UV radiation, diesel exhaust and now night shifts! Millions of people round the world, more so in the developed world, are working late night shifts and face the possible risk of developing cancers. Recent research has brought out the evidence that women who work for years in night shifts are more likely to develop breast cancer and men who work similarly are more likely to develop prostate cancers. In experimental studies animals who have their light-dark schedules switched grew more cancerous tumors and died much quicker.

Cardiovascular fitness schedule

It has been proven conclusively that if you spend a few minutes every day exercising you will do your heart a whole lot of good. Even 20 minutes of exercise on at least 3-4 days in a week is more than enough to improve cardiovascular fitness, burn calories and tone up your body.
What are the various exercises one can do to improve the cardiac fitness?
1. Riding a stationary bike: Pedal with medium resistance and gradually increase the speed and resistance.
2. Walk on a treadmill: Take rapid and long strides and aim to attain a speed of 4.5 miles per hour. Ten minutes into the workout increase the incline.
3. Run on a treadmill: Begin with walking, after 3 minutes run for a minute and then again return to a slow run rhythm for 1 minutes followed by a one-minute run.

Internet Addiction Disorder

Beware of the internet!! Those who are addicted to web surfing are more likely to suffer from the Internet Addiction Disorder – a pathological condition that can lead to deep depression and anxiety.
The addiction is just not an urge, it manifests as a craving much like you being hooked onto exercise, smoking, or even using the mobile phone. So what are the symptoms that can warn you of your internet addiction? You might experience loss of sleep, anxiety when offline, isolation from friends and family, loss of work and periods of deep depression. People between the ages of 16 and 60 can suffer from this disorder and more so if they suffer from the ’empty nest’ loneliness syndrome.

Smoking cessation pill to be banned

Champix (Varenicline) from Pfizer, a drug that is claimed to help people quit smoking is currently under the scanner by the MHRA, the UK medicines’ watchdog. It has been claimed that Champix is causing suicidal tendencies in people using it. 839 adverse drug recations were reported and included depressive behavior, mainly in people with previous psychiatric disease.
Champix both stimulates and blocks the nicotinic receptors in the brain. By stimulating the receptors it reduces the cravings and by blocking the receptors it results in a weaker response to people who give in and light up a cigarette. 44% of the users give up smoking after taking Champix twice daily for 12 weeks.

In search of the perfect smile

Many people run to the dentist for some cosmetic dentistry work to give them that perfect smile. However a lot of factors are responsible for the perfect smile and not just the whiteness of the teeth.
The right size and width of each tooth, right curve, color and shape of the teeth, and the overall width of the mouth are also very important. The whiteness of the teeth should match the whites of the eyes. If it is whiter than the white of the eyes then it will distract the onlooker from the rest of the face.
