One day I went to a bank with my grandmother. There I met one of my old friend named Arun.
He asked me how I was there? I told him that I had come with my gandma for some banking work.
He touched the feet of an old lady. The lady told him that she couldn’t recognise him. Arun pointed towards me said that he was my friend.
The old lady looked at me and asked “who are you”?
I asked Arun “do you know each other”?
Arun replied “don’t you recognise your grandmother”?
I understood all matter and told him that my grandma was on the next counter.
We all laughed heartily. Arun felt sorry to the old lady but she was impressed by our moral conduct and said “there is no need to be sorry, you have done nothing wrong and you will get blessings only”.
One can easily admit that the best days of his life are the college days. The incidents that take place are remembered by us throughout life. Suddenly when the thoughts come we cannot stop ourselves from tickling.
Ragging is considered a curse for the colleges. It can prove to be a nightmare for many students. But I had an exceptionally well experience of ragging. My college is around 23 km from my home. So it takes around 1 hr to reach my college. Now thats a pretty good time in terms of interacting with the students on bus. In my 1st year I opted for the college bus to reach my college.
I recall having spent a sleepless night after seeing the Govind Nihalani’s film ‘Aakrosh’ (1980). This has happened to me on very few occasions – only when the visuals or a very strong impression from a screen character left me silenced. ‘Aakrosh’ was one of them. And there were two reasons for that – one was the brilliant camera work of Nihalani and the other is the reason for my writing this post.
A fantastic piece of acting by none else than Om Puri! Yes, the character Bhiku (that he played) captivated me and left me spellbound. And, remember he was playing a character who did not speak even a single word in the film!!
Twenty-seven years has passed since then …. And we are still seeing the charm of this man – both in India and abroad.
I do not believe that an actor should be ‘international’ only if he or she has been to Cannes, Karlovy Vary, Moscow, Tashkent or for Academy Awards. Real international performers are those who have crossed boundaries with their acting, be it within the framework of their work or by showcasing a talent that can be compared to any international standards.
This was my feeling after I completed viewing a film named ‘Bandini’ during a retrospective of films of Bimal Roy many years back. This film had, among other greats like Ashok Kumar, …., a young beauty named Nutan.
I still remember the film with vivid details that launched my imagination to think beyond the boundaries of the screen.
Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso and George Bush all die and are waiting to be admitted into heaven. St. Peter is not an easy man to please and he needs identification from each one of them before letting them go in.
First up is Einstein. St. Peter asks him to prove that he is Einstein. Einstein requests for a blackboard and chalk and starts a lengthy explanation on the theory of Relativity. St. Peter is convinced and lets him enter heaven.
Next is Picasso. St. Peter asks him to prove he is indeed Picasso. Picasso takes a piece of cloth and wipes the black board and draws a beautiful sketch of the surroundings with St. Peter in the frame. St. Peter is convinced and lets him enter.
Three people are discussing the advances medicine has made in their respective countries.
Japanese: Surgery in Japan is so advanced. Recently a man had his hands chopped off on the conveyor belt at his workplace. Surgeons rushed him to the theater and managed to attach back his blood vessels, tendons, nerves and muscles and his hands are fully functional today.
Indian: That’s nothing. There was a man who was crushed by a fast train and all his internal organs were crushed completely. Surgeons in India were able to attach every organ piece by piece and today he is alive and healthy.
